THE READING STYLE INVENTORY ®
(RSI) GRADES 1-12

Teachers - Eliminate the Guesswork!

Research tells us that students have different learning styles for reading – or “reading styles.” The Reading Style Inventory (RSI) identifies a student’s learning style for reading and provides specific teaching recommendations that accommodate that style. The information on RSI profiles is ideal for writing IEP’s or other student plans.

A quick look at what the RSI does…

• The student answers the RSI questionnaire online (audio is
               available).

• After scoring the answers in seconds, you can print RSI profiles, a personalized parent letter and report, and a parent booklet explaining reading styles.

• RSI Individual Profiles list each student’s learning preferences, strengths, weaknesses, and best reading materials and strategies. And they provide definitions of terms and descriptions of how to teach 14 different reading methods.

• RSI Group Profiles provide group summaries and graphs for on-target reading instruction.

Note: The RSI is based on the Dunn and Dunn model of learning style.

Research Results
Fifteen years of research indicates that the implementation of RSI recommendations produces significant increases in reading motivation and achievement, and improves academic growth across content areas. (See for example: Brooks, 1991; Oglesby & Suter, 1995; and Snyder, 1997.) In addition, the Reading Style Inventory is used to guide reading instruction in the research-based Carbo Reading Styles Program (CRSP). For example, the Kentucky Department of Education recommended CRSP for “its consistently high student performance results” (Results-Based Practices Showcase, 1997-1998), and the Northwest Regional Labs (funded by the U. S. Department of Education), listed CRSP in 1998 and 2002. RSI Reliability. RSI Validity.
