Reliability of the
Reading Style Inventory®

A series of test-retest reliability studies were conducted with the RSI from 1981 through 1994, as the instrument evolved. In the 1994 studies, students were drawn from inner-city, suburban, and rural areas. The samples also represented good, average, and poor readers. A three-week test-retest was observed in each case. These are the results of the most recent studies.

Reading Style Inventory, Grades 1-2
In a sample of 183 first- and second-graders, reliability coefficients for the RSI-P subscales ranged from .73 to .91, with an average of .81. The highest reliability
coefficient average was obtained for the perceptual subscales.

Reading Style Inventory, Grades 3-8
In a sample of 216 students in grades 3-8, reliability coefficients for the RSI subscales ranged from .69 to .88, with an average of .87. The highest reliability coefficient average was obtained for the perceptual subscales.

Reading Style Inventory, Grade 9-Adult
In a sample of 122 students in grades 9-adult, reliability coefficients for the RSI-P subscales ranged from .71 to .92, with an average of .86. The highest reliability
coefficient average was obtained for the perceptual subscales.
