Despite high rates of unemployment and poverty, Paterson Elementary students have shown significant improvement in reading using the Carbo Reading Styles Program. From 1998 to 2000, students in grades 1-6 gained an average of 9.5 percentiles in their total reading scores on the SAT-9. In spring 1999, Paterson met its academic objective by moving from an Alert II status to a Caution status. Note: Paterson Elementary is an inner-city K-6 school. Most residents in the Paterson School District are unemployed. The enrollment is 99.2% African-American; 99.9% of the families live at or below the poverty level as defined by the U.S. Government; 100% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and 17% receive special education services.
